ISTANBUL, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) — Artificial intelligence (AI) is opening up new possibilities for journalism, but media organizations must strengthen cooperation to ensure technological advances go hand in hand with reliable reporting, said Sumeyra Teymur, CEO of Turkish news platform Haberler.com.
In an interview ahead of the 7th World Media Summit, Teymur praised China’s innovative use of AI in journalism, saying she was impressed by the country’s efforts to integrate advanced technologies into the media industry.
“I heard about and saw AI anchors presenting news during my previous visit, which really impressed me,” she said. “I have always loved technology, and these developments make me excited. I am always thinking about what is coming next.”
She also expressed interest in the potential use of humanoid robots to cover dangerous situations, such as earthquakes and conflicts, where deploying human reporters could pose risks.
Haberler.com has also integrated AI into its daily operations. Receiving more than 2,000 news articles from various sources every day, the platform uses AI to organize content, generate headlines and supplement articles with relevant photos and videos, enabling its editorial team to handle a larger volume of news.
However, Teymur stressed that human oversight remains essential, warning that AI can make mistakes and facilitate the creation of fabricated news, images and videos, as well as the manipulation of voices and identities.
“Whenever we use AI, we always have a human checking the content,” she said, emphasizing the responsibility of media organizations to verify information before publication.
She called for stronger international media cooperation in sharing information, technological expertise and cultural stories, noting that no single organization can tackle the rapid spread of misinformation across borders alone.
The 7th World Media Summit, hosted by Xinhua News Agency and the Beijing Municipal People’s Government under the theme “Media in the Intelligent Age: From Consensus to Action,” is being held in Beijing from Nov. 5 to 9.
Teymur said she looked forward to exchanging experience with Chinese journalists and strengthening ties with Chinese media organizations. ■
