BEIJING, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) — A mainland spokesperson on Wednesday said attempts by Taiwan’s Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities to decouple the island’s industries from the mainland market are doomed to fail.
Speaking at a regular press briefing, Zhang Han, a spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, said the DPP authorities had been desperately obstructing economic exchanges across the Taiwan Strait and catering to external forces.
According to official data, trade between the mainland and Taiwan totaled 301.2 billion U.S. dollars in the first nine months of this year, up 30.3 percent year on year. Mainland imports from Taiwan reached 216.3 billion U.S. dollars, an increase of 27.8 percent.
“These figures fully demonstrate that cross-Strait industrial and supply chains have become more resilient and that markets on both sides of the Strait will never be decoupled,” Zhang said, adding that economic exchanges and shared development across the Strait are an unstoppable trend.
The spokesperson also responded to recent remarks by a Taiwan economic official regarding plans by the island’s authorities to tighten controls on AI chip exports to the mainland and launch restriction measures that “correspond to U.S. ones.”
She criticized the DPP authorities for disregarding the interests of Taiwan’s industries and businesses, while following the United States in lockstep to pursue their own political interests, obstructing and restricting normal business operations.
“The mainland is committed to greater self-reliance and strength in science and technology,” Zhang said. “External blockades have never been able to hold back our progress, and they will be even less able to do so in the future.”
The Chinese mainland’s AI core industry was estimated to have exceeded 1.2 trillion yuan in 2025. By the end of September, its smart computing power reached 2,592 EFLOPS, up 146 percent year on year — EFLOPS refers to a unit measuring computing performance, with each unit representing 1 quintillion floating-point operations per second.
Zhang warned that the DPP authorities’ restriction measures would only benefit opportunists pursuing “Taiwan independence” at the expense of Taiwan’s industries and ordinary people, as they are squandering the competitive strengths of the island’s industries built through generations of hard work by professionals, entrepreneurs and researchers. ■
