Riyadh
The Chinese newspaper People’s Daily has inaugurated its regional office in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, marking a new milestone in strengthening media and cultural relations between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the People’s Republic of China.
The opening took place during a meeting between Saudi Minister of Media Salman bin Yousef Al-Dosari and People’s Daily President Yu Shaoliang and his accompanying delegation. The two sides discussed aspects of media cooperation and ways to further develop them in line with global transformations in the media and digital landscape.
The discussions covered areas of collaboration in digital media, news content exchange, professional training, and joint production. They also explored opportunities for synergy between Saudi Vision 2030 and China’s Belt and Road Initiative, as two strategic projects aiming to reshape the contours of economy and development across Asia and the world.
Both parties affirmed that the opening of the new regional office represents a significant step toward building a deeper media and cultural bridge that helps convey an accurate picture of the progress and developments taking place in both countries across various fields—economic, cultural, political, and sustainable development.
In a post on platform X, the Saudi Minister of Media commented: “When the largest newspaper in China chooses Riyadh as its regional headquarters, it is not merely selecting a geographic location—it is choosing the destination of the future.”
This step goes beyond the mere opening of a media office; it marks the beginning of a new phase of Chinese presence in the regional media scene and reflects mutual confidence in the Kingdom’s position as a strategic hub for decision-making and influence in the region.
Choosing Riyadh as the regional headquarters for People’s Daily carries implications extending beyond the media sphere. It signals growing international recognition of Saudi Arabia’s role as a key player linking Asia, Africa, and Europe, and as a hub for trade, energy, and investment routes—an arena where major developmental visions converge.
Moreover, the presence of People’s Daily in Riyadh provides a direct channel for exchanging messages and perspectives between Beijing and Riyadh, paving the way for joint media production that contributes to shaping a more balanced and equitable global discourse on development issues.
This move comes within a broader context of growing Saudi-Chinese rapprochement, as both nations continue to expand cooperation in energy, technology, infrastructure, and culture. Media relations are no longer a mere diplomatic luxury but have become part of the soft-power framework that major countries seek to strengthen to enhance their global presence.
In this light, the opening of People’s Daily’s regional office in Riyadh stands as a practical instrument for translating political and economic convergence into a shared media narrative that addresses public opinion in both countries.
